Entomology is a word that comes from the ancient Greek language. entomon means “insect” and is derived from the stem “entomos”, which means “cut, divided”; most insects have their bodies divided into numerous rings or segments. “Logos” means speaking, speaking, thinking, studying something. Thus, Entomology becomes the study of insects.
“Insect” is another word with an interesting meaning, derived from Latin. animal insectum means “segmented animal”; insectum is the past participle of the verb insecure, which means “cut into” (parts). Therefore, the word insect itself refers to the fact that these animals have their bodies divided into segments.
Insects form the largest class in the Animal Kingdom, with more than 800,000 known species. Insects live all over the world. From polar regions to tropical zones, passing through rivers, seas and oceans.
Although the appearance of insects is very varied, the bodies of all of them are divided into the head, thorax and abdomen. On the head are a pair of antennae and 3 pairs of jaws. All insects have 3 pairs of legs. Not all insects _______ wings. Most of these animals reach maturity through metamorphosis.
It is not possible to say that an insect, found on any plant without major economic importance, is a “pest”. Most insect species (about 98%) do not fall into this category. In reality, these species are all part of a delicate and important natural biological balance, whose disturbance by man can result in the appearance of pests.
