NAME:
Once, animals got together to decide who was the most useful animal for man. The horses neighed that they helped all day on the farm. The cows mooed that they shared their milk daily with the man. The cats meowed that they caught the rats that gnawed all the man's grain.
Each species of animal thought it helped man the most.
Then the camel slowly got up.
– Oh, you! – barked the dog. – You have no use! What job could you do on a farm one day? Could you plow a field?
All the other animals laughed in agreement. Then, the wise owl hooted for silence and said:
– You are all wrong! Camel brother does so much more than any of us would! He can walk for miles on hot desert sand that would burn us in an hour! He can go without water for days! He manages to bravely face strong sandstorms that would blind us in minutes! No wonder man calls the camel “the ship of the desert”!
And the camel bowed and sat down, while the animals saluted him!
