A myopia it is among the main deficiencies in vision, and it is already common knowledge that the disease has a large genetic factor. Recently, however, researchers noticed five other variants that, when related to high levels of schooling, which imply more time dedicated to studies and little time outdoors, increase the risk of myopia in adults. A paper conducted by Cardiff University was published in the journal Plos Genetics, using information from over 340,000 people living in the UK. The results of the study showed that such genetic variants gradually increase the danger of myopia according to the person's level of education, especially those with higher education.
Of the five verified genes, three had never been identified, while the other two had already been found in surveys. epidemiological data from East Asia, where approximately 80% of children develop myopia, against 30% of Westerners, according to authors.
Other studies have already shown similar results.
According to the study's lead author, some previous research has found 450 genes that may be linked to myopia. At the same time, in the study in question, a huge UK genetic and health database was used, containing information that goes beyond medical conditions, also including the education of the participants, for example.
In this way, the researchers were able to look for variants that, when associated with higher levels of education, would have the chance of increasing people's susceptibility to visual disease.
Despite this, the main author believes that the research was not decisive, and more studies need to be carried out, seeking to understand more deeply the interaction between these genetic characteristics and life habits, since these cause and effect correlations are never simple.
However, this in no way diminishes the interest and importance generated by the discoveries, which are at least unprecedented for the medical community and scientific which seeks to better understand the causes of myopia.
