Ageism, a social plague that compromises the future of Brazilian society
Due to the worsening of the crisis arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, the numbers showed in 2021 the worst situation in the entire series of the study, which started in 2012.
The misery index starts at zero and reaches a maximum of 1, that is, the higher it is, the worse the situation. In the calculations made by the researchers, this index is now at 0.947, rising approximately 60% compared to 2020, when it was 0.591. The index is looking beyond the impact of inflation and unemployment on low-income households.
Data include underemployment, per capita household income of the country's poorest 20%, inequality between these groups and the richest 20% and also default, which limits access to credit for consumption. The study also provides a more accurate thermometer with regard to the effects of difficulties in the lives of Brazilian people living in poverty on the eve of the elections.
Default is just not being worse than in 2020, which was the height of the pandemic and social isolation. According to the survey, 27.2% of debtors currently have their payments late.
