Libras (Brazilian Signal Language) is used by about 5 million people in Brazil and is the main means of communication for most people with hearing impairment in the country. Libras started to be recognized as a legal means of communication and expression on April 24, 2002, through Law No. 10,436. The law was the basis for public policies that include provisions such as teaching Libras in basic education, among others.
