The author of Marcelo, Marmelo, Martelo, who introduced generations of Brazilians to the pleasure of reading, was herself passionate about books.
Ruth Machado Lousada Rocha, or simply Ruth Rocha, was born in São Paulo/SP on March 2, 1931. His definitive encounter with literature, as a child, was with the stories of Monteiro Lobato. As a teenager, she devoured the works of masters such as Machado de Assis, Manuel Bandeira, Fernando Pessoa and Guimarães Rosa.
From reader to writer, it was a leap, right? It wasn't quite like that. Ruth first graduated in Political and Social Sciences, with a postgraduate degree in Educational Guidance. Between 1956 and 1972, she worked as an educational advisor at Colégio Rio Branco.
It was at this time – more precisely, in 1968 – that she began writing about education for the magazine Cláudia, published by Editora Abril. She was soon invited to collaborate with the magazine Recreio, from the same publisher, aimed at children and adolescents. It was there that she published her first stories for children.
In 1973, Ruth Rocha assumed the editorial direction of Abril's Children and Youth Division. Three years later, she released her first book: Words, Many Words. Still in 1976, she published her great success: Marcelo, Quince, Hammer and Other Stories, which had more than 70 editions and sold over 20 million copies.
