Almerinda Farias Gama was one of the first black women to act in Brazilian politics. She was, in her words, “a lawyer aware of the rights of the working classes, a combative journalist and an action feminist”. A brave Alagoas, who overcame prejudices, but which History ignored.
Born in Maceió on May 16, 1899, she moved to Belém / PA at the age of 8 to be raised by an aunt, after her father's death. In the capital of Pará, she graduated as a professional typist. And, as she was a good writer, she soon began to publish articles in a newspaper.
But she wanted to work in her field of training, and went looking for a job. That's when she discovered that the vacancy that interested her paid 50% more to typists, for the simple reason that they were male. That episode inflamed the spirit of Almerinda, who from then on began to fight for equality of rights between men and women.
Almerinda moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1929. In a short time, she established herself in the profession and became president of the Union of Typists and Shorthand writers. Since that time, she already realized that the vote it was the way for women to conquer their place in the spaces of power, and they joined the suffragette movement.
In 1933, Almerinda became the only woman to vote in the National Constituent Assembly as a class delegate (ie, representative of a working class). The following year, already graduated in Law, she decided to run for federal deputy. Her flags were women's economic independence, the worker's legal guarantee, and compulsory and free education for all Brazilians at all levels. Forward, she, right?
Almerinda unfortunately was not elected. But, for sure, she was a winner, breaking barriers, overcoming prejudices and making herself heard.
Almerinda died at the age of 93, in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro, leaving no heirs. But every time a black girl becomes interested in politics, she receives the blessings and encouragement of this admirable woman.
