Although it looks like a big chicken, the curassow is a very rare bird. It was discovered in 1766 by scientists traveling through northeastern Brazil, but it was missing for many years. It was only in 1951 that it was found and in 1970 it was already considered totally extinct from nature. Today, it is among the most threatened animals in Brazil.
The northeastern curassow is a difficult bird to spot. Despite flying, he really prefers to walk with his long and strong legs on the Atlantic Forest floor. Its plumage is black with bluish and orange reflections on the belly. Its beak is light red on the half closest to the head and whitish towards the tip. In the region, around the ear canal, it has no feathers.
Because it has been missing for so long, researchers do not have much information about the wild curassows. About his diet, it is known that he likes to eat catuaba fruits and a few other plants. The only nest of this bird observed in the wild until today was in the top of a tree, in the middle of the dense foliage.
In an attempt to save the northeastern curassow from extinction, a true rescue operation was created by a biologist named Pedro Nardelli. He brought the last five birds he found in the state of Alagoas to a breeding site in Rio de Janeiro. As a result of this preservation initiative, the species was able to reproduce and was closely observed.
In the breeding, the curassow-of-northeast feeds on feed, fruits, liver, eggs and honey, in addition to vegetables. Females begin reproduction after the second year of age and lay two to three eggs, which take about thirty days to hatch. A few hours after birth, the puppies already follow their parents. At three months, their plumage is completely replaced and in less than a year they reach the size of an adult bird.
Some places in Alagoas, one of the original states of the curassow-of-northeast, seem to be suitable for re-housing birds born in captivity – there are already more than 120 individuals. But for these animals to return to nature in safety, it is necessary to recover and preserve other forests in the region, in addition to monitoring individuals. Let's cheer!
