Jatobá (scientific name Hymenaea sp.) is found in the Amazon, the Atlantic Forest, the Pantanal and the Cerrado, with occurrences from Piauí to Paraná. The origin of its name comes from Tupi and means “tree with hard fruits”. In the past, it was widely used by indigenous peoples in times of meditation. Thus, the Jatobazeiro came to be considered a Brazilian sacred heritage.
Even today, its flour is widely consumed in rural areas, either in its natural form or in the form of bread, cookies, cakes, milk shakes or as an ingredient in fruit smoothies.
Despite having a slow growth, the tree reaches up to 40 meters in height and has a trunk with a diameter of almost one meter. Its wood is widely used for construction in beams, doors, clubs, boards, in addition to being used in art objects, decorative pieces and luxury furniture. For this reason, it is one of the most valuable woods in the world.
Its fruit matures between July and September, has a hard skin and an average of two seeds per fruit. Inside, the pulp is a yellowish green powder with a strong odor, which is edible. The pulp is rich in iron and is indicated for people with a high degree of anemia. The bark is also used for tea. It is a plant with medicinal use and current research indicates that Jatobá can be used to fight some types of cancer. Jatobá sap is obtained through the perforation of the trunk and is traditionally used as a curative for various ailments, including anemia, convalescence and lung problems.
