The Biodiversity Heritage Library (Biodiversity Heritage Library, in the original, known by the acronym BHL) is an invitation to discovery and inspiration from free access to knowledge about biodiversity.
The site brings together and makes available free literature and visual collections on biodiversity around the world, playing an important role in the global biodiversity community.
If you are fascinated by nature and botanical illustrations, you will certainly be thrilled to browse through so many beautiful messages.
Among the open access content available, there are more than 100,000 images and photographs divided into albums.
Nineteenth-century volumes, for example, range from birds of Australia to a strange set of bat illustrations.
We cannot fail to mention botanical illustrations, with drawings originally published in French, German, English and South African magazines.
The images offer a fascinating insight into the biodiversity that exists – or once existed – in all these countries.
BHL has put together a special collection to talk about the contributions made by outstanding women in biodiversity research.
