This difference in our country has been happening since 1948, so that it coincides with the eve of Saint Anthony's Day, known as matchmaking saint. However, the reason for the choice has little to do with the religious meaning, but exclusively commercial.
The idea of establishing a “Valentine's Day” celebration came from publicist João Doria, father of the current governor of São Paulo. He owned the Standart Propaganda agency, and was hired by the Expo Clipper store with the aim of improving the result of June sales, which were very weak.
So, inspired by the success of Mother's Day in the country, Doria instituted another commemorative date to exchange gifts in the year: Valentine's Day.
June was chosen because it was precisely the month when sales slowed down. The choice of the 12th had to do with the fact that it was the eve of the celebration of Santo Antônio, who was already famous in Brazil for being the matchmaker saint.
Uniting, then, the useful to the convenient, Doria created the first advertisement that instituted the date in the country.
“Love is not only proved with kisses!”, said a slogan for the first Brazilian Valentine's Day. “Don't forget: love with love is paid”, said another. The advertisement was awarded by Associação Paulista de Propaganda as the best of the year.
