THEME: Diseases caused by protozoa

SUGGESTED TIME: 1 class

GOALS:

  • Know some diseases caused by protozoa.
  • Learn ways of transmission of some diseases.
  • Understand what a vector is and recognize their role in the spread of disease.

MATERIAL REQUIRED:

  • Computer/video projector.
  • Video about a disease caused by a protozoan (suggestion in development).
  • Text for understanding about vector and etiological agent.

DEVELOPMENT:

  1. Recall the Kingdom Protista with the students, they should know the protozoans and their life habits.
  2. Introduce the topic and ask if anyone knows of a disease caused by protozoa, encourage class participation.
  3. Remind students of the concept of a parasite.
  4. Watch the video about Chagas disease together.
  5. After discussing Chagas disease, talk about the symptoms and transmission of other diseases such as malaria and toxoplasmosis.
  6. It is important that students realize that all these diseases caused by protozoa have a vector that transmits the protozoa, talk about vector and etiologic agent.
  7. Study measures to prevent diseases caused by protozoa, talk about vector control for each of the 3 diseases that were studied.

ASSESSMENT:

The evaluation of this class can be done through the participation of students in the discussions proposed throughout the study.
