Harvard Alert: 5 foods that cause abdominal bloating

O abdominal swelling appears along with other uncomfortable sensations, such as gas, constipation and excessive abdominal pain. According to research by professor of medicine at the Harvard Medical School, Jacqueline Wolf, in every 10 people, one has discomfort after eating.

The most common cause for diagnosing this discomfort is to evaluate the patient's diet, although the case may involve other health-related factors. Generally, foods that cause bloating are not properly absorbed from the intestines and are not properly digested by the stomach.

If this has been your biggest problem, know that some foods that cause bloating have a name and a last name!

Foods that cause bloating

According to the doctor. Jacqueline Wolf, a gastroenterologist specialist at Harvard, these are foods that cause bloating:

1. Bean

Legumes such as beans, peas and lentils contain high amounts of raffinose. Raffinose is a kind of sugar that our bodies cannot easily digest. These foods are more likely to cause gas and need to be left to soak for at least 6 hours before being heated.

2. High-sugar foods

Our body has difficulty absorbing high amounts of sugar, so it is necessary to avoid soft drinks, ready-made juices, sauces (ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise), packaged breads and all kinds of sweet.

3. Fructose

Those who are sensitive to fructose, for example, need to avoid certain fruits. In cases of sensitivity, discomfort can cause swelling.

4. milk and derivatives

For those who are lactose intolerant, swelling is an ally for those who eat milk and its derivatives. The best way to deal with bloating is to stop consuming these foods and look for lactose-free options.

5. Foods that contain gluten

Gluten intolerants may develop abdominal swelling frequently. Generally, they are foods composed of grains: wheat (in breads, cakes), barley (in beers) and white rice.

How to reduce swelling?

In addition to avoiding certain foods, there are ways to reduce bloating:

• Chew slowly: don't eat fast, chew every piece of food and don't lie down while eating or drinking something;
• Avoid drinking sparkling water: avoid any type of refrigerator or carbonated drink;
• Take a walk: exercise for 10 to 15 minutes when you feel your abdomen swollen;
• Massage the area: to relieve the pain caused by the swelling, massage the abdomen in circular motions towards the pelvic area.
