Senate approves grace period for payment of Fies and other bills

In a remote session this Tuesday, May 12, the Senate passed three bills - you PL 675/2020, PL 1,409/2020 It is Bill 1,079/2020.

The wording of the texts prohibits the registration of names in credit protection bodies, gives priority to some professionals in the new coronavirus testing and benefits students with the suspension of payment of the Student Financing Fund (Fies), during the period of public calamity.

Suspension of negative consumer registration

Bill 675/2020 aims to suspend for a period of 90 days, starting on March 20, the inclusion of new names in negative registrations at SPC/Serasa.

The aim is to guarantee that the people affected by the new coronavirus pandemic, in the state of public calamity in Brazil, can have access to credit.

“In addition, given the fact that many establishments are not open to the public, the risk of that consumers may face difficulties in obtaining the necessary assistance to solve financial disputes and cadastral. Thus, not succeeding in settling the debt in a timely manner or even in correcting erroneous information”, highlights the company.

From another perspective, theEnador Oriovisto Guimarães (Podemos – PR) considers the project very dangerous. According to him, although well intentioned, it can bring more harm than good.

“Imagine stores, banks, finance companies having to decide on credit and not having information. Having to decide in the dark, because you no longer know if the person has or has not registered, if he has paid or not. Not informing a financial system leads to paralysis or to an explosion in interest rates”, emphasizes the senator.

In another way, senator Rogério Carvalho (PT-SE) considers that human gestures should stand out at the moment.

“Compassion, generosity, humanity must prevail. We are facing a gesture of confidence in human beings, of providing conditions for people to can touch their lives, with all the restrictions that we know that a pandemic like this imposes”, affirm.

Priority to professionals fighting Covid-19

The text of bill 1,409/2020 aims to adopt immediate measures that prioritize professionals who work on the front lines of the fight against Covid-19 in the realization of disease tests.

The list includes workers who are in direct contact with infected patients, such as health workers and funeral directors.

“These professionals are not asking for a salary increase, they are not looking for privileges. They just want equipment so as not to pose risks to their health and that of those they serve”, argues Senator Zenaide Maia (Pros – RN).

The parliamentarian complements the speech by saying that they just want a test to find out if they are carriers of the disease or not, even without symptoms. And that, due to their profession, they may be contaminating hundreds and thousands of Brazilian men and women.

Benefit to Fies students

Students who have joined the Fies may benefit from another bill (PL 1.079/2020). In the newsroom, a suspension of payments may be granted to these students.

According to Senator Dário Berger (MDB – SC), “The measure allows for the withdrawal of restrictions on the credit records of those financed, in addition to relieving the insured, the equity of the guarantee fund to curb or to cover advances for renewal of contracts formalized up to 2017″.

With that, he adds that the need for new federal contributions for this purpose is avoided.
