Until recently, the existence of just one female of the rare species of giant Yangtze soft-shelled tortoise came to a tragic end during an attempt at artificial insemination.
That was when, surprisingly, they discovered a living female in Vietnam, which renewed hopes for the conservation of this species.
Now, faced with the regrettable news of the death of the animal found, the extinction of the species seems something that cannot be avoided, because there is no confirmation about the existence of other females or even males that may be hidden, waiting to be revealed.
The female found dead was one of four of the same species still alive, now just three males, two in China and one inhabiting Lake Xuân Khanh, also in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The tortoise's cause of death has yet to be confirmed, as stated by Phung Huy Vinh, head of the economic department of Son Tay City, in a response to VnExpress.
Tim McCormack, head of the Indo-Myanmar Conservation Asian Turtle Program, echoed the news of the death of the animal to the Times newspaper, after the announcement of the death of the turtle in the communication vehicles vietnamese.
Tim, for his part, expressed disappointment over the turtle's death.
He stated that it was the same individual that was being monitored in recent years for the preservation of the species and emphasized that the turtle was a large female, with significant reproductive potential, capable of laying more than one hundred eggs per year.
McCormack considered the loss a blow to the species' conservation.
