Who was Paulo Freire?

Paulo Freirewas one of the best known Brazilian educators. He developed the Pedagogy of the Oppressed, in which the school is seen not only as a means of teaching technical concepts, but also a more critical view of society.

His literacy method explained that it was essential to provide critical awareness, autonomy, in addition to decision-making capacity. All of this together increases the student's self-esteem.

in your book Pedagogy of Autonomy, the educator reflects on the relationship between educators and students. In addition, he elaborates practices that develop in students everything that his method predicted.

Paulo Freire's method

For Paulo Freire, education should also be concerned with the problems that society was going through, and not just the technical part. His method became known as a strategic way to teach adults to read and write.

With that in mind, he understood that an education with more autonomy and critical awareness was essential.

So, you can summarize the Paulo Freire's method in: the educator demonstrates that the student has fundamental experiences for learning, so it is possible to organize all this knowledge into school knowledge.

In this way, with the more active participation of the students, a routine that is more open to dialogue and reflection is developed. Thus, the student, by feeling more active during the process, becomes more autonomous.

Paulo Freire's books

Paulo Freire was the author of several books on education. Check out some:

  • Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1968)
  • Politics and Education (1985)
  • Pedagogy of Hope (1992)

Quotes by Paulo Freire

Check out some quotes from Paulo Freire below:

Nobody educates anyone, nobody educates himself, men educate each other, mediated by the world.

Education, whatever it may be, is always a theory of knowledge put into practice.

Reading must be an act of love.

Although they want good teachers for their children, few parents want their children to be teachers. This shows us the recognition that the work of educating is hard, difficult and necessary.

If education alone does not transform society, without it society does not change either.
