Food selectivity: a RISKY behavior for children

Adequate intake of vegetables, fruits and greens is a key factor in maintaining health and preventing non-communicable diseases, such as obesityand among other diseases.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is recommended to consume at least 400 g of these foods daily, which is equivalent to 5 servings of 80 g each.

By including these foods in our diet on a regular basis, we can reap several benefits for our well-being and quality of life. Fruits, vegetables and greens are rich sources of vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants, which help to strengthen the immune system and keep the body healthy.

In Brazil, eating a good variety of vegetables, fruits and greens is still unpopular. According to 2019 data from Vigitel, which maps risk factors and protection against chronic diseases, less than 50% of the adult population consumes these foods regularly.

However, the formation of healthy eating habits since childhood is extremely important to promote a healthy and balanced adult life.

However, it is common for some children to develop food selectivity at some point in their development, which can cause concern for parents.

Healthy eating should start in childhood

According to Dr. Jessica Cavalcante, director of Instituto Neuro and specialist in the subject, it is important that parents and caregivers are aware of signs of food selectivity in children.

This selectivity is characterized by constant refusal to eat certain foods, often due to the texture, color or taste of food.

Food selectivity can be identified when the child has an excessive preference for a number limited range of foods and is resistant to trying new flavors or foods outside their comfort zone to feed.

The expert emphasizes that food selectivity, when it becomes exaggerated or persists beyond the first years of life, can lead to nutritional imbalances.

In more extreme situations, this selectivity can evolve into a condition called avoidant restrictive eating disorder, which requires the intervention of health professionals.

Nutritional imbalances resulting from food selectivity can affect the development and health of the child, impairing adequate intake of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients essential for proper growth and functioning of the organism.

To combat food selectivity in children, Dr. Jessica Cavalcante advises creating an environment that stimulates curiosity and experimentation with food. A gradual approach is recommended, introducing new foods carefully and respectfully.
