The portal Tech Radar Pro had access to the results of a projectdata recovery performed by Secure Data Recovery, a renowned company specializing in this field. The discovery was a pleasant surprise on the part of specialists.
The project aimed to determine the amount of files that could be recovered from a large number of hard drives, excluding solid state drives or memory cards. The experts from Secure Data Recovery shared these results exclusively with the informational portal.

The company purchased 100 hard drives at random and attempted data recovery using appropriate methods. However, for this specific project, it was decided not to invest resources in data recovery from encrypted or damaged drives, since in many of these cases the chances would be that recovery.
During the data recovery process, Secure Data Recovery was able to successfully recover data from 35 drives, of which 34 had been sanitized, 30 were damaged, and only one drive was encrypted. None of the recovered drives were the hybrid type, which combines solid-state memory with traditional hard disk drives.
A total of over 5.7 million files were recovered, although that number was significantly impacted by a single hard drive that contained over 3.1 million files.
The oldest recalled unit was a 2.5-inch Western Digital model manufactured in 2004. Furthermore, nearly two-thirds of the units purchased were 3.5-inch models.
The findings underscore a widely recognized reality: most users do not have comprehensive plans for destruction or proper disposal after replacing damaged or obsolete hard drives, especially those that rely on PATA interfaces or SCSI.
This can result in the unintentional preservation of sensitive data and potential exposure to security risks.
It is critical that users take appropriate measures to ensure the safe destruction of data on hard drives. before discarding or reusing them, in order to protect confidential information and avoid possible violations of security.
