However, the present poverty and social inequality have also been identified as significant factors that influence violence in several Latin American societies.
Lack of access to basic resources, such as education, health, adequate housing and decent employment, can lead to a cycle of marginalization and social exclusion.
In this context, many vulnerable communities face precarious conditions and lack of opportunities, which can generate frustration, hopelessness and dissatisfaction, culminating in growth of violence.
1. Colombia
Colombia, which ranks first on the list of the most dangerous countries in Central and South America, faces serious challenges in terms of security and peace index.
With a score of 2,693 on the Global Peace Index, the lowest in Latin America, the country has struggled to contain violence and homicides, as well as other crimes.
In recent years, the nation has been affected by a high number of homicides, with fluctuating records around 12,000 cases.
In 2021, this figure increased to 14,159 registered homicides, a considerable increase compared to the 12,347 cases of the previous year.
These alarming numbers thus reflect the persistent challenges facing the country regarding public safety and the pursuit of peace.
2. Venezuela
A country with a rich cultural diversity and natural beauties on the north coast of South America, Venezuela also has indigenous and Spanish customs, as well as Caribbean and Andean influences in its culture, which generates a diversity interesting.
However, this long-suffering nation has also faced serious political and economic challenges that have contributed to an insecure and problematic situation.
Many residents and visitors consider the place an environment of instability, dealing with issues such as undemocratic governance, corruption and mismanagement of the economy.
Therefore, Venezuela occupies the 140th position, sharing this ranking with other countries that face similar challenges in terms of stability and security.

3. Mexico
This emblematic country belonging to Latin America is known for its rich culture, stunning landscapes, fascinating archaeological sites and unique cuisine.
In addition to its cultural richness, Mexico occupies a significant economic ranking in the region, being the second largest economy in Latin America, right after Brazil.
With a GDP of approximately US$1.27 trillion in 2021, the Mexican economy stands as the 15th largest in the world, according to the World Bank.
However, unfortunately the use of firearms has been shown to be the main contributing factor to homicides in Mexico, which significantly affects both men and women.
Between 2015 and 2022, the percentage of male deaths committed with firearms increased from 60.9% to 71.9%.
Likewise, the proportion of female murders using firearms, including feminicides, also increased, rising from 37.8% to 59.7% in the same period.
4. Brazil
Despite its economic prosperity, the Brazilfaces significant challenges regarding security and violence. High unemployment has been a worrying factor and contributes to the increase in crime.
Violence in Brazil is a serious concern, and figures show that the country recorded 40,824 homicides in 2022. This impacts the sense of security and quality of life for the majority of the population.
5. Haiti
It is recognized as the second oldest republic in the Western Hemisphere, right after the United States. However, despite its rich history, it faces serious socio-economic challenges.
For this reason, the country is considered the poorest nation in the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region and is among the poorest nations in the world.
In 2021, Haiti's Gross National Income (GNI) per capita was just US$1,420, the lowest in the LAC region, compared to an average of US$15,092 for the rest of the world.
This reality of extreme poverty has devastating consequences, including an increase in crime in the country. Data collected by the National Police of Haiti reveal that more than 1,600 incidents, such as homicides, rapes, kidnappings and lynchings, were registered in the first quarter of 2023.
Such numbers represent an alarming increase in relation to the same period of the previous year, which accounted for 692 incidents involving different crimes.
