Last Tuesday (4), the Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, announced the formalization of a Inter-ministerial Technical Cooperation that aims to combat hunger and malnutrition in public schools in the Brazil.
The document establishes an alliance between the National Education Development Fund (FNDE), the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Family Agriculture (MDA), the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger (MDS) and the Ministry of Health.

The government plans to allocate around BRL 5.5 billion throughout 2023 to meet the food needs of approximately 40 million students of public basic education, which corresponds to a growth of 36% in investments.
Still according to Ministry of Education, the new interministerial agreement will follow the guidelines of the National School Feeding Program (PNAE).
Camilo Santana spoke about the motivations for the pact. “In some schools and municipalities, many times the only meal the child has during the day is the one offered at school. This is a cruel reality. We have to be indignant, every day, and not accept that, in a country the size of Brazil, there are still people going hungry”, he said.
In parallel with the signing of the agreement, the Federal Government assumed the commitment to work to promote the expansion of the purchase of food from family farming and reduce the consumption of industrialized food by educational establishments public.
After the publication of the agreement, which will last for 48 months, the participating ministries will have to meet every two months, with the objective of jointly planning and organizing the applied actions.
The Ministry of Education (MEC) will lead the meetings and also the actions more focused on themes related to education and the promotion of healthy food and nutrition for students.
Meanwhile, the FNDE, which is linked to the MEC, will be in charge of collecting data on the acquisition of genres food products from family farming and to coordinate strategies to improve food school.
At least 30% of the financial resources transferred by the FNDE, through the PNAE, must be used to acquire foodstuffs directly from family farming and rural entrepreneurs locations.
In addition, agrarian reform settlements and also indigenous and quilombola communities should be prioritized in the acquisition of food used in schools.
