There is an evident social difference between men and women: from an early age, women are encouraged to take care of their health and easily submit to tests. On the other hand, for men, exams and a healthy routine face a series of taboos and rules that erroneously question masculinity.
The male audience, for example, needs to do a digital rectal exam when they turn 50 years old and many prepare yourself psychologically for this moment throughout life, despite being a procedure painless. This example certainly reflects a society that does not consider frequent routine health care as a necessity.

Failure to perform tests frequently can be a major problem. More advanced diseases, such as cancer, need to be discovered early so that treatment can be effective in controlling the disease.
According to Inca (National Cancer Institute), lung cancer is the second with the highest number of incidences. In 2023 alone, around 30,000 Brazilians were diagnosed with the disease, making it the fifth most common cancer in women and the fourth most common cancer in men.
As pulmonologist João Batista de Sá Filho, from HU-UFMA, stated, smoking is the main risk factor for the development of lung cancer, accounting for 80% of cases of the disease.
There are reports that there are smokers who have never had lung exams to monitor the health of the organ. Beneficência Portuguesa (BP) in São Paulo launched the Pulmonary Chek-up program, which offers exams lung tests aimed at the public with a greater chance of developing the disease, in addition to supporting research in the area.
According to pulmonologist Felipe Marques da Costa, from Beneficência Portuguesa (BP), when the disease is discovered in an initial phase, the patient has a 90% chance of being cured, even if he is or has been smoker.
Edmundo Caboclo recently became a member of the BP project. He says he was always concerned about having tests done, as he was a smoker for many years and his mother died of lung cancer. Despite having been warned several times about the need to stop smoking, experts never indicated the correct way to do this or the importance of routine exams to monitor the health of the organ.
While research on prevention advances, experts study the best ways to guide patients to adopt a routine of exams and healthy practices. In any case, routine exams for men and women remain indispensable.
