O National museum, which was completely destroyed by fire on November 2 in Rio de Janeiro, received a donation of 180,800 euros from the German government. The amount, equivalent to approximately 808 thousand reais, will be used to recover the collection rescued from the rubble.
The consul general of Germany in Rio de Janeiro, Klaus Zillikens, stated that the donation represents only an initial stage, since the National Museum will continue to be assisted. The German government intends to provide a contribution of up to 1 million euros, which must be transferred according to the museum's demands.

For the National Museum, the donation is extremely important, as it will be used to purchase specific recovery materials, listed by the search teams. Items such as computers and special magnifying glasses will be purchased – one of which will even be used in particular in the reintegration of Luzia, the oldest human fossil in Brazil.
Although the fire destroyed much of the National Museum, the search teams are happy with the items recovered so far: about 1,500 items, including pieces from the collections, equipment, personal objects, architectural fragments and some objects not yet identified.
Some archeology, mineralogy and ethnology materials have already been found and recognized. Among them are prehistoric pieces, metal arrowheads made by indigenous people in the early 20th century, ceramic urns of Tupi and Marajoara origin, stones such as black tourmaline, in addition to Karajá dolls, registered as intangible heritage of Brazil.
According to the director of the museum, the rescue work is proceeding as planned. The main focus is on shoring up the weakest walls so that researchers can gain access to the building to look for parts. The work covering the palace should start next month, in January next year.
So far, all the progress made at the National Museum was thanks to the transfer of R$ 10 million made by the Ministry of Education. However, for 2019, at least R$56 million is expected from the federal government. The information is from Agência Brasil.
