Bald eagle surprises photographer after being spotted with peculiar object in its talons

Man takes photo of bald eagle and is surprised. Doug Gemmell is a nature photographer who, when he saw a perfect opportunity to photograph a eagle bald in the middle of the hunt, he couldn't resist and managed to portray something curious in the bird's fangs.

The eagle photographed by Doug Gemmell, despite being very young, without even having feathers on his head yet, already had a hunting instinct by nature. Therefore, upon noticing the eagle heading towards the Gemmell ground, the professional could not pass up the opportunity to photograph it.

The diet of bald eagles consists basically of fish. However, that day, Gemmell managed to capture an entirely different food in the eagle's prey. After all, the eagle, when descending towards the ground, was going to a parking lot, with the objective of capturing a different meal.

As photographer Doug Gemmell's view was obstructed by a bank of snow in the foreground, he was unable to make out what was in the eagle's prey as he took the picture.

The surprise that was in the eagle's claws

Despite having his eyesight slightly destroyed, the nature photographer managed to take good pictures of the eagle and, thus, only later, when he went to review the photos, did Gemmell realize what he had captured. “I didn't know what the eagle had taken until I got back home… When I cut some of the pictures, I could see that it was a half-eaten slice of pepperoni pizza”, says the photographer.

The fact is really surprising, considering that pizza would not even be part of the diet of these birds. “I thought, ‘Wow. That's pretty cool, when I saw pizza in their clutches… That's not something you see every day, that's for sure,” he concluded.

Gemmel says he has no way of knowing whether the pizza actually served as a meal for the eagle or was just a catch. However, in any case the record was really surprising.

“With nature photography, things happen so fast that you don't always know exactly what you've just taken a picture of. So when you get a chance to see the photos, you're sometimes pleasantly surprised that you've captured something you didn't even know was there at the time."
