Judging the Decanter World Wine Awards, considered the Olympics of the wine world, involves a rigorous and anonymous selection process. All wines awarded with the Platinum medal are submitted to a fourth tasting, known as Best in Show, to determine which are the best drinks.
In this final stage, the wines are blindly evaluated again, including only those that received 97 points. Selecting the best 50 wines is not an easy task, as we are only talking about 0.27% of the 18,250 wines analyzed.

Gerd Stepp, a longtime judge, commented that this process is similar to the Olympics, where the competitors are unknown. The final round of judging is considered the final competition, in which wines are evaluated to determine the top 50.
In the final round of the Decanter World Wine Awards, the four co-chairs play a key role in determining the “Best in Show”.
During the final round, they meet and apply the competition's principles of discussion and deliberation, scrutinizing the wines with the highest scores.
The co-chairs have the challenging task of evaluating hundreds of Platinum medal-winning wines and identifying the one that stands out among them. This choice is considered difficult, as it requires a thorough analysis of the characteristics and merits of each wine.
According to the organizers of the event, the award values restraint, elegance and refinement of wines, without seeking unnecessary extravagance.
It is a recognition of the balance and subtlety present in the production of these copies. Only exceptional wines manage to stand out in this fierce competition.
During the judging process, judges and producers evaluate each wine without prior knowledge of the label, reputation or expectations associated with it. This approach guarantees an impartial and objective evaluation, focused exclusively on the intrinsic quality of each wine.
