There are several economic reasons that can lead to an increase in food prices in any society. Among them, we can list the shortage of a certain input, in addition to the increase in demand for a specific product and even the increase in the price of raw materials, etc.
For example, the increase in the price of wheat can lead to an increase in the price of bread and pasta in general. Similarly, if a country experiences a drought or climate change that decreases the possibility of producing wheat, then the price will also increase.
Generally, in inflationary cases, there is an increase in the cost of producing food due to various economic difficulties. These producers' difficulties are passed on to consumers in the form of price increases. This is the economic situation of the increase in food prices in Brazil.
With so many difficulties, consumers will always opt for ways to reduce food costs. Thus, one of the strategies is to seek discounts on food due to the proximity of the expiration date.
This is what a study of the Food Dive, where 6 out of 10 consumers report looking for food close to expiration date to get discounts. However, specialists warn that this practice can be dangerous, since the slightest expiry of the expiry date on some products can lead to health consequences.
However, this is in fact the result of inflationary processes, as eating is not an option. Thus, in many cases, as opposed to the option of not buying products close to their expiry date, it means starving or, at least, reducing the quantity and quality of food.
