New Zealand leader announces he will step down next month

Since 2017 in the position of Prime Minister of New Zealand and in politics since 2008, Jacinda Ardern has announced that she will step down in February. Labor Party policy explained the reasons why it will no longer govern.

Jacinda pointed out that she went on vacation to have quieter days and be able to rest to look for reasons to continue in office. "But, unfortunately, I didn't succeed and I would be doing New Zealand a disservice if I stayed in office", pointed out the prime minister.

New Zealand Prime Minister resigns

The announcement came at a time when voters and politicians were not expecting it. As a result, next Sunday, voters will vote for another politician to replace the prime minister.

“I am human. We give as much as we can for as long as we can and then it's time. And for me, the time has come. I'm leaving because with such a privileged job comes a great responsibility. The responsibility of knowing when you are the right person to lead – and also when you are not”, said the prime minister.

Recently, a Deloitte survey was released stating that 46% of women suffer from burnout. It is an emotional disorder caused by the work environment, influenced by great stress, mental breakdown. The syndrome is also encouraged by the fact that most women do not reach leadership positions.

Jacinda did not point out the syndrome as the main reason for leaving the position, but it coincides with the reality of other women in the environment in which she lives.

During the covid-19 pandemic, the prime minister was at the forefront of the world in fighting the virus, but still suffered political pressure from the country's opposition. On February 7, the Prime Minister will step down from the Labor Party. Jacinda stated that she had to hold back her tears when resigning.

“These events… have been taxing because of the weight, the sheer weight and the ongoing nature of them. There was never a moment when it felt like we were simply ruling,” Jacinda said.
