First, she separated the participants into two groups that would have different tasks in a simulation, in which they would be thieves in a museum.
Thus, they were instructed to carry out actions in a computer game that represented an art museum with colored doors and paintings with different values. On the second day of testing, the groups needed to identify the works of art in the place visited.
The results showed that being in stressful situations improves focus, but affects the memory. On the other hand, curiosity can activate another area of the brain that stimulates this cognitive aspect.

The first group selected in the Duke University study had to imagine themselves during the robbery, while the second team needed to plan the criminal action during a visit to the location.
“To one group we said: ‘You are master thieves, you are doing a robbery right now. Take as much as you can’. While for another group we said they were thieves who were visiting the museum and planning a robbery in the future,” Sinclair said.
As a result, the teams performed very differently. The group that was in a state of urgency had better strategic performance in the game. This team managed to memorize the doors with paintings of greater value.
On the other hand, the other team had better memory performance on the second day of tests. They correctly remembered more paintings and their values.
For the researcher, the study pointed out that stress affects memory and long-term action. Therefore, the best strategy is to allow people to activate curious mode to retain information for the long term and improve memory.
Thus, the analysis demonstrated how the human mentality operates with different stimuli. The study will enter a new phase to understand how urgency and curiosity actually impact different parts of the brain.
