A daring expedition is about to launch into the remote reaches of the Peruvian Andes on a mission to redefine the extent of the famous Amazon river.
Led by Brazilian documentarian and explorer Yuri Sanada, the team aims to prove that the Amazon is the longest river in the world, surpassing the current holder of the title, the Nile.

Conventional records place the Nile as the longest, with 6,650 kilometers, followed by the Amazon, which is 6,400 kilometers long.
These data are in accordance with sources such as the Encyclopedia Britannica, the United States Geological Survey and the Guinness Book of World Records.
However, investigations carried out by Brazilian institutions, such as the Institute of Geography and Statistics, question these numbers.

In April 2024, the expedition led by Yuri Sanada will set out to map and measure the entire course of the Amazon River, including tributaries that were previously not considered.
The Mantaro River, located in Peru, has the possibility of extending for up to 6,800 kilometers. This potential rise could expand the total length of the Amazon, surpassing the Nile as the longest river in the world.
The expedition, named “Amazon, from ice to sea”, will have several purposes, in addition to establishing the precise extent of the Amazon.
The team will document the region's rich biodiversity, in addition to the environmental challenges caused by human activities such as mining, drug trafficking and organized crime.
These problems have caused irreparable damage to the Amazon region. The expedition plans to produce an IMAX documentary to raise awareness of the urgency of preserving this vital ecosystem.
Yuri Sanada emphasizes that the expedition is not just a search for a record, but also an opportunity to leave a legacy for communities that depend on the Amazon in countries like Brazil, Colombia and Peru.
The team will use professional cameras to capture the unique biodiversity and impacts of human activity.
Another innovative aspect of the expedition is the testing of electric boats developed in Brazil. These vessels cost less than their German or Chinese counterparts, and are more durable and easier to repair.
The expedition will use prototypes of these boats, built by the São Paulo Faculty of Technology, as part of its mission to explore, document and preserve the amazing Amazonian ecosystem.
This endeavor could not only reset a world record, but also inspire action to protect one of the most precious ecosystems on the planet.
