The species is widely distributed in the Amazon region; tuft color differentiates populations.
The habit of living among cocoa plantations could serve as inspiration for the popular name of the chocolate woodpecker, but the “baptism” is actually due to the plumage in shades of brown.
With about 30 centimeters, the bird, typical of the Amazon, parades the chocolate-colored feathers that contrast with the yellow on top of the head. Common in terra firme and floodplain forests, it is also found in gallery forests, mangroves and secondary forests.
Widely distributed throughout the Amazon region, the chocolate woodpecker lives alone, in pairs, in groups of up to five individuals or even in mixed flocks.
In the reproductive period, the species makes holes in dead trees and palm trees, where it lays two to four white and shiny eggs.
The chocolate woodpecker feeds on insects, larvae and fruits. Arboreal termite mounds also serve as a “restaurant” for the bird.
With a yellow tuft, the individuals that live in the north of the Amazon River differ from the populations found in the south, which have a brown tuft.
