Swallow Tanager

The species has a wide distribution throughout Brazil and “appears” and “disappears” in some regions.

Who doesn't love seeing a colorful bird? The swallowtail tanager (Tersina viridis) is one of those species that surprises whenever it appears. Male and female differ, but both attract attention with their beautiful feathers. While he has a bright, metallic light blue on much of his body, his partner is greenish.

There are those who initially confuse the species with another bird: the blue tanager (Dacnis cayana). In fact, these relatives are similar, but you just need to pay attention to some details of the swallowtail to notice the difference. The male's trademark is a whitish belly and a black streak between the colored and white feathers on the front. Furthermore, it has a black mask on its face that reaches the eye area and the lower part of its beak. The female does not have this mask, but, like her pair, has a whitish belly. The difference is that the striatum is also white, not black.

This bird is considered an excellent seed disperser and has a wide distribution throughout our country, but it is not always easily seen. The best time to find it is during the fruiting period of some trees.

The species tends to “appear” and “disappear” from our eyes easily and its behavior is still little known to science. […]
