The excursion was part of the Institute of Education and Culture de Carmo do Rio Claro, and around 41 students embarked on this exciting journey to explore the historical beauties of the region.
Teenager Álvaro described his exciting discovery: “I looked to the other side and saw a yellow thing shining. At one point I thought it was dirt, but when I asked the guide and he said it was gold, I was very happy.”

“At the moment they didn't believe it, but when the guide Giovane said it was gold, everyone was surprised, asking if it was true that it was gold,” said Álvaro.
What makes this story even more incredible is the young man's curiosity and attention. While exploring the mine, he noticed a glow in the rocks, something that caught his attention and prompted him to ask the right question, triggering the discovery of the century for his school trip.
The History teacher who accompanied the class, Junio César Oliveira Martins, revealed that the gold nugget will be treated as a “heritage asset for educational purposes”. This means that the discovery will not be commercialized, but rather used for educational purposes, possibly in a school or museum.
Álvaro's mother, Ruth Dias Freire, expressed her pride and surprise at her son's discovery: “Wow, it's a mystery. I didn't understand. Just like the guide said, it took a long time, the mine was deactivated. For him to have this observation and find something that is loved and desired by everyone is incredible and satisfying. We didn’t imagine.”
This story is a testament to the importance of keeping our eyes open to the wonders around us and the incredible educational journey that can occur when we least expect it. For Álvaro, this school trip certainly became an experience he will never forget.
