Barbara Heliodora was born in Rio de Janeiro, the youngest daughter of Anna Amélia and Marcos Carneiro de Mendonça. She began her career in 1958, at the age of 35, as a theater critic for Press Tribune. From 1958 to 1964, she wrote the specialized column for
Also a teacher, essayist, translator, she was recognized as an authority on the work of William Shakespeare. For many years, she was professor emeritus at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).
After retiring from UFRJ in 1985, the following year she returned to work as a journalistic critic at the magazine Vision, then moving on to the newspaper The globe, where she settled.
Having published several books, she decided to leave her position in January 2014, at the age of 91. Barbara was admitted to Hospital Samaritano, in Botafogo, south of Rio, on March 23, 2015. She died on April 10 of that year. She left behind three daughters, from two marriages, and four grandchildren. She was cremated at the Carmo Memorial, in the Caju Cemetery, in Rio.
