Hadfield, with a 35-year career at Canada's space agency, argues that the scene in which the hero is subjected to extreme conditions in space is actually “misleading” from the point of view scientific.
In the film's plot, Peter Quill faces a situation of almost sacrifice when he is exposed to the space without protection for a prolonged period.
However, based on his experience as an astronaut, Chris Hadfield notes that the scene contains significant inaccuracies.
Hadfield explains in an interview with Vanity Fair: “Our best guess is that you can survive in space without a suit for up to 30 seconds. However, after a minute and a half, devastating and irreversible events would occur, leading to death. In about 15 seconds, your blood would not contain enough oxygen, and when that affects the brain, you would lose consciousness.”
Ignored scientific details
The retired astronaut didn't just point out the basic error of survival in space. He also noted more subtle details of the scene that don't match reality: “When Quill gets ice on his face, it doesn't make sense. There’s no water on his face to freeze like that.”
Although “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is a work of Science fiction and fantasy, Hadfield's analysis highlights the importance of scientific precision, even in films that explore the limits of reality.
The film, which represents the conclusion of a trilogy that began in 2014, follows the beloved group of misfits as they face challenges and dilemmas.
The team seeks to settle in Nowhere, but their turbulent pasts and unexpected events threaten to destabilize their lives.
With the loss of Gamora after the events of “Avengers: Infinity War” in 2018, Peter Quill brings his team together on a mission that could spell the end of the Guardians as we know them. The film is available to fans on the Disney+ streaming platform.
