As previously stated, the object was discovered by a colony of fishermen carrying out cleaning work in various locations in Rio de Janeiro. According to the state's Rio Fishermen's Federation, more than 150 tons of trash have already been collected from beaches and rivers.
The movement is part of the Águas da Guanabara program, which aims to provide detailed information about the waste found in these locations. Furthermore, it intends to measure the impacts on the fauna and flora of São Gonçalo Bay.
Made of plastic, the discovered bottle takes around 450 years to decompose in the environment. On the other hand, its cap lasts “only” 150 years in nature.
Although the Coca-Cola bottle is a special and celebratory item, it is included in the state's untreated solid waste account. O Rio de Janeiro throws away more than R$2 million in waste that could be recycled.
The estimate presented above is part of the Mapping of Post-Consumer Recyclables in the State of Rio de Janeiro 2023.
