The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) will be responsible for the technical-scientific guidance of the Climate Plan – Adaptation strategy, for through the technical working group – of the four that make up the Interministerial Committee on Climate Change (CIM) – to be installed next Wednesday (8).
During the meeting for this purpose, held last Wednesday (1st), with the participation of representatives from 19 ministries, it was also decided that the groups, monitored by MCTI, will last for 120 days.

Regarding the importance of the role of the public sector, in the search for solutions to climate problems, the holder of the MCTI, Luciana Santos reaffirmed: “I have said that science and technology are fundamental to combating change in the climate".
Joint work – Also present at the meeting, the minister of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MMA), Marina Silva, highlighted that this is work that must be carried out together, including government and society. “Everyone is invited to this adaptation agenda”, she reinforced.
By highlighting the ‘integrated’ character of the Climate Plan, the representative of the Civil House – who is responsible for coordinating the CIM and federal actions – Karen Cope stated that this should address aspects such as mitigation and adaptation, in addition to allowing an updated view of Brazilian policies for area. “This agenda is of high priority and importance,” she added.
In turn, the general coordinator of Climate Science at MCTI, Márcio Rojas, drew attention to the department's responsibility for advancing the frontier of knowledge, giving as an example the investments in cutting-edge scientific projects, such as 'AmazonFACE', through which it will be possible to evaluate how the Amazon forest will behave in the future. “This is one of the most relevant scientific projects today. In a small plot of forest, it will simulate the atmosphere predicted for 2050, with a concentration of 600ppm of carbon dioxide,” he revealed.
Within this effort, another ‘heavy’ investment is the Environmental and Climate Change Synthesis Center (SIMAClim), which will produce information resulting from scientific evidence, aimed at policyholders decision.
Minimized impacts – Although it does not eliminate the impacts of climate change, the adaptation agenda can minimize them, notes the expert on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation of MCTI, Diogo Santos, comments: “Taking the concept of climate resilient development, adaptation represents an opportunity to face fundamental issues for sustainability and well-being”, by asking: “What effort should be made to put oneself on a trajectory adaptive? We have to be aware of where we are, where we are going and what trajectory we want”, he replied.
Effective for 12 years and reviewed every four years, the Climate Plan should have its strategy completed by the beginning of next year, when the sectoral plans will also be finalized. Under the coordination of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the plan is co-coordinated by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. Last September, workshops on climate justice and climate emergency were held.
