A study carried out by the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) suggests that ayahuasca tea, a drink used in religious rituals, can play a relevant role in the treatment of severe depression.
A research, conducted by doctoral student Cid Pinto, from the UFC Postgraduate Program in Pharmacology, under the guidance of professors David by Lucena and Danielle Macêdo, demonstrated that doses of this substance have the capacity to reverse the symptoms associated with this condition health.

The study, carried out as part of the pre-clinical testing phase, used mice to induce depressive behaviors associated with the disease, using corticosterone in animals.
Subsequently, the mice were grouped and subjected to a series of tests to evaluate different factors such as the ability to fight for life, blood corticosterone levels and other parameters relevant.
The research, which began in 2018 and was published in 2021, does not aim to develop a new drug formula, as explained by the researcher.
He emphasizes that, due to the religious nature of ayahuasca tea, it is not possible to use it as a basis for creation of a drug, since the legislation does not allow this type of approach, and this is not the objective of the study.
The ayahuasca tea used in the research was provided by União do Vegetal, a religion that uses the drink in rituals. Cid mentions that an infusion was sent to São Paulo to analyze its composition.
Furthermore, the doctoral candidate highlights that the main focus of the research is the in-depth understanding of the pathophysiology of depression and how it operates.
He emphasizes that this study raises more questions than it provides answers, with the aim of investigating whether there are mechanisms additional information, in addition to those already known in occasional medications, which may explain the faster action of ayahuasca in reversing symptoms.
