The great jumping pot-bellied monkey

Species is considered threatened with extinction

The woolly monkey moves incredibly quickly and can make spectacular jumps from one tree to another. The small ears and round head, entirely covered in short hair, guarantee an unmistakable appearance to one of the largest primates in the Amazon. On the belly, a long, dark coat gives the impression of a pot-bellied appearance.

The woolly monkey's tail is prehensile and it uses it to hang from trees. On the ground, it adopts a bipedal position with the tail facing upwards. Their diet is predominantly fruit-based, but potbellies also eat leaves, seeds, insects and arachnids.

Native to South America, the species can be found in Bolivia, Peru and Brazil, more precisely in the states of Roraima, Pará, Amazonas, Acre and Mato Grosso. In general, woolly monkeys live in groups of up to 20 individuals, properly balanced in the number of males and females. But it can also be divided into subgroups, which have around seven monkeys. Sometimes they are seen in the company of spider monkeys or howler monkeys.

The expansion of agriculture is one of the main factors destroying the habitats of the woolly monkey, which also suffers from hunting and illegal trafficking.
