Last Sunday (19), Araçuaí, a city in Minas Gerais, reached a historic milestone by recording the highest temperature ever recorded in Brazil, as indicated by the secondary stations of the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet).
The temperature reading reached 44.8 ºC, a reference to the heat dome that covered much of the country at that time.

This extreme heat is not just limited to Araçuaí on this day. In the Jequitinhonha Valley, the city of Itaobim recorded 42.8 ºC. Governador Valadares, for example, recorded 41.6 ºC. Meanwhile, in the North region, Salinas reached 41.3 ºC.
These significant numbers highlight the scope and intensity of the heat that affected several locations, revealing a wave of high temperatures that left its mark in different parts of the state of Minas General.
In addition to these cities located in Minas Gerais, other capitals also registered heat records during the last few days.
The recent rise in temperatures, which marks a fourth heat wave in Brazil this year, is attributed to a combination of factors.
While it's common to experience heat waves during the spring, this time it's being exacerbated by a El Niño intensified, along with the evident effects of global warming.
On November 21, 2005, the municipality of Bom Jesus, in Piauí, held the record for the highest temperature already recorded in Brazil, reaching 44.7 ºC, according to data from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet).
The high temperature recorded in Minas Gerais is justified by the presence of El Niño, as occurred when Bom Jesus reached the record in 2005 and 2006.
This worrying perspective for Brazil's climate future is not limited only to the natural characteristics of El Niño.
Climate change, driven by human activity and the emission of polluting gases, plays a significant role in intensifying these climate extremes.
