In yet another chapter of a soap opera that never seems to end, this Tuesday (28) vice-president Geraldo Alckmin, who assumed the presidency of the Republic on a temporary basis, said that the government may start taxing international purchases with values below US$50 in brief.
Alckmin cited Remessa Compliance, a system created by the government to formalize the registration of websites such as Shopee, Aliexpress and Shein, which now they need to report international purchasing data.

Still during his speech, made during the installation meeting of the Commerce and Services Forum, of the MDIC (Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services), the vice-president stated that he was in favor of 60% taxation on any order.
Currently, purchases below US$50 are only subject to 17% ICMS, a state tax that is diluted in the amount paid by the consumer at the time of purchase.

Over the last few months, a war of declarations has been launched by members of the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva administration regarding the taxation of international orders.
Initially, the government was in favor of taxing any order of this type. Upon noticing the negative response from consumers, Lula's economic team went back and established the charge only for purchases over US$50.
Recently, the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, resurrected the original position of the current government, only to be denied.
As expected, the news that the government is considering reactivating taxes on goods coming from abroad did not please consumers at all.
Since they were broadcast, Geraldo Alckmin's speeches have attracted a flood of angry comments on the government's official social media pages.
Among the main complaints, consumers point out that the 17% ICMS “is already enough”, and that registration with Compliant Shipment, which is not mandatory, should be taken into consideration in maintaining the “promise” made by management Squid.
It is important to mention that, despite recent statements by the Vice President of the Republic, no official government position on the matter has been released.
