NAME:
Read:
Belonging to the Hirundinidae family, the ribbed-back swallow has four subspecies, measures 14 centimeters and weighs 20 to 28 grams. It frequents the same places and habitats as the gully swallow, in large flocks, sometimes associated with the white-billed swallow and the barn swallow.
It feeds on insects, especially beetles, also flying ants, wasps and grasshoppers. With its mouth open, it is capable of chasing swarms and catching insects in mid-air.
Their life expectancy is usually more than five years. As a sociable species, it routinely flies in huge flocks of hundreds of individuals and rests on power lines.
The breeding period runs from April to August, with 4 to 5 eggs per clutch, incubated for 14 or 16 days. To build nests, groups organize colonies on cliffs, canyons, bridges or even buildings.
