Many species are cultivated for decoration, such as the popular weeping fern and maidenhair fern. But did you know, for example, that the original xaxim – a type of plant support made from organic material – is extracted from ferns?! It is removed from the stem of some species, where a layer of roots called adventitious grows. The xaxim is made from these roots, which serves as a natural vessel for growing a series of plants, even other ferns. But be careful: the xaxim is a species threatened with extinction, which is why its extraction and commercialization are prohibited. To replace it, gardeners and traders have been looking for other raw materials, including coconut fiber.
