Microwaves were known long before the oven existed, a creation by chance. Know this story!
During World War II (1939-1945), microwaves were used in radar to detect aircraft (the fuselage of the aircraft reflected electromagnetic waves, making it possible to predict the approach of a possible enemy, by example).
In 1945, the American engineer Percy LeBaron Spencer was working on a project that used, precisely, microwave radar equipment. It was then that he noticed something strange: the chocolate that was in one of his pockets melted! It was thanks to the heat generated by the microwaves.
Impressed by the discovery, Percy began experimenting with other foods, such as corn (which turned into popcorn) and an egg (which exploded under the pressure). With this information, the engineer deduced that the microwaves would be able to do things similar to other foods. In 1946, he registered the first patent for the use of microwaves in the culinary environment.
The following year (1947), Raytheon (the company Percy worked for) produced the first microwave oven to be sold. But the model at the time was not as practical as the ones today: it was almost 2 meters tall and weighed 340 kilos! Over time, the novelty was perfected.
