North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un will invite Pope Francis to visit Pyongyang, the country's capital.
The invitation will be delivered through the mediation of South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who will be at the Vatican, headquarters of the Catholic Church in Italy, next week. The information was released on Oct. 9 by South Korea's official spokesman, Kim Eui-kyeom.
The gesture is seen as a conciliatory act, as North Korea and the Vatican do not have formal diplomatic relations. It is the first time a pope has been invited to the country since 2000.
Pope Francis has already voiced messages in support of the historic summit between the North Korean leader and US President Donald Trump.
