Few animals draw as much attention as the white uacari. After all, who wouldn't stop to observe this red-faced, white-furred monkey, capable of leaping about 30 meters when passing from one tree to another? Found only in Brazil, this animal really deserves all the looks! Even more because it has many other curious features...
For starters, the white uacari is bald. Therefore, it received the name from the scientists cacajao calvus calvus, since the word “bald” comes from the Latin bald, which means “no hair”. But if the white uacari's head lacks hair, the same cannot be said of its body. It is all covered with long white hairs. The exception is the belly, which has reddish-yellow hairs.
The red face of the species, in turn, can be an asset when the white uacari need to find a pair. That's right! This monkey lives in flocks composed of up to 50 animals and, at the time of reproduction, in March and April, who has a redder face draws more attention and is more likely to find a partner to have puppies. After all, a red face is a sign of good health!
And since we are talking about offspring… The gestation time of the white uacari lasts approximately six months and only one offspring is born at a time. The newborn is carried by the mother and is firmly attached to her belly, but when she is two months old, she jumps onto her back. Unlike its parents, the white uacari baby is covered in dark gray hair and is not bald. This species of monkey is born with hair on its head, but loses it as it gets older.
The white uacari live at the top of the highest trees in the Amazon Forest, where they spend the day looking for food. However, it is not all over the forest. It only occurs in areas flooded by clear water rivers, places known as Amazon floodplains. To feed, it descends to the lowest branches of trees. It eats seeds, sprouts, leaves, insects, and while other monkeys feed on ripe fruit, this species likes to eat unripe fruit. Besides, he doesn't go down to the ground to drink water, even though he lives beside rivers. It prefers to lick the leaves and drink rainwater that accumulates in plants called bromeliads. Another curious detail: the name Uacari was given by the Indians and represents the sound emitted by the animal.
Deforestation is the worst threat to the white uacari. To prevent the extinction of this animal, we must preserve the environment in which it lives, preventing its destruction. Only then, the white uacari will always have something to eat and where to live!
