Anyone looking at Meyer Filho's paintings notices the constant presence of a red sun. It is about Mars, a planet of which the Santa Catarina painter claimed to be an honorary citizen: “I am an ambassador of Mars on Earth”, he used to say, seriously, in interviews. For those who asked if he was joking, he was categorical: “It's true”. You don't even need the red sun to notice the influence of the Martian seasons. The roosters he painted to exhaustion had visibly local features.
His fantastic surrealism, an innovation in southern art in the 1950s, still printed backyards, winged horses, landscapes of Florianópolis and folklore beings, in a peculiar explosion of colors. Born in 1919, Meyer painted roosters since he was a child. He was a public employee at Banco do Brasil for 30 years. At 27, he discovered that his business was art: “From then on, I started to face the bank – which I love, but who has a damned rage at me – as a way to become a great artist and take care of my family". Meyer estimated that he had scribbled 30,000 drawings on the back of checks, deposit slips, and tokens.
Finally retired, he was able to dedicate himself exclusively to paintings. Realized
individual shows in several Brazilian capitals without leaving Santa Catarina. Died in 1991, his work has spread in museums around the world. Maybe even out of it. About the Red Planet, it said that the interest rate was much lower than here. And even though ice sprouted from the ground, "as the Phoenix probe attests." Once, he invited a friend to one of these extraterrestrial visits, and assured: “There will be no shortage of ice for our scotch!”.
