Daiane dos Santos is one of the greatest artistic gymnasts Brazil has ever known. But his career started in a very unusual way.
Born in Porto Alegre on February 10, 1983, Daiane has always been very athletic. She was discovered by teacher Cleusa de Paula while playing in a square.
The teacher bet on the girl's innate talent and invited her to train at AACETE (Association of Friends of the State Sports Training Center) and later at Grêmio Náutico União. Daiane was already 11 years old – much older than most beginning gymnasts – but she made up for her age with a lot of determination.
So much dedication paid off: at age 16, Daiane won two medals (silver in horse vaulting and bronze for teams) at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg (Canada).
At the age of 20, she became the first Brazilian athlete, between men and women, to win gold in a stage of the World Cup of Artistic Gymnastics. It was in 2003, at the World Championships in Anaheim (United States). Daiane won the final of the solo competition and enchanted the world to the sound of “Brasileirinho”, a chorinho by composer Waldir Azevedo. On that occasion, he performed for the first time a movement with a high degree of difficulty, the double twist carped. The movement became known as “Dos Santos I”, and its variation, the stretched double twist, as “Dos Santos II”.
The following years were full of training, injuries and medals. Daiane participated in the main artistic gymnastics competitions in the world, almost always with good results. When he retired from the sport, at the age of 29, he collected dozens of medals, including nine gold medals in stages of the World Artistic Gymnastics Championship.
Black, short and very determined, Daiane became a great inspiration for Brazilian gymnasts. Nowadays, she is a businesswoman and participates in several projects that promote the sport.
