Did you know that Halloween is not the creation of the United States?
Halloween or the halloween it is not the creation of the United States. The festival is much older, having its origins in Celtic Ireland, where, around the 5th century BC, the year ended on October 31st.
New Year's holiday was called Samhain. It was believed that on that day the dead returned to Earth. Wanting to expel them, the peasants put out the fire in their houses, making them unwelcoming, dressed as evil beings and made terrible noises.
The Romans who occupied Celtic territory in the 1st century AD integrated Samhain into celebrations in honor of Pomona, the goddess of orchards and crops. Later, when the Roman world became Christian, the celebrations were linked to All Saints' Day, in English, All Hollows Day, whose eve – All Hollows Eve, where the term Halloween comes from – it was the day when the dead and witches were on the loose.
Trick or treating?
The habit of ordering candy from house to house, which we see in American movies, comes from a 9th century tradition when young people roamed the city asking for money, pies and cakes. In return, they promised to pray for the souls of the dead. The custom of taking revenge on those who refused to contribute – the pranks – probably arose around the same time.
In Brazil, we never had the Halloween tradition, but a few years ago, schools and English courses started to celebrate the date, mainly with costume parties. A lot of people turn up their noses, saying this is an American thing, but the party comes from much further away. From the same culture, by the way, that began, so many centuries ago, to celebrate Christmas in December, along with the Celtic festival of the winter solstice.
