They lived under the bridge. Officially, it's not a place to live, but they did. Nobody charged them rent, property tax, condo fee; the bridge belongs to everyone, at the top; from no one at the bottom. They didn't pay electricity and gas bills, because electricity and gas didn't consume them. They didn't complain about lack of water, rarely seen under bridges. Garbage problem they didn't have; it could be thrown anywhere, although it would not be convenient to throw it anywhere, if clothing, food, and household items often came from it. They lived under the bridge, they could give that address to friends, welcome them, make them enjoy the bridge's interior amenities.
In the afternoon, a friend appeared who lived, not even he knew where, but he certainly did: not only the bridge is a place of residence for those who do not have another ranch.
There are comfortable benches in the highly sought after gardens; the sidewalk, a little less favorable; the cavity in the stone, the weeds. Even the air is a house, if we know how to inhabit it, especially the air in the street. Whoever lived, it is not known where he came to visit those from under the bridge and bring them a large piece of meat.
Not every day you get a steak. It is not enough to look for it; it must exist, which usually happens within certain limitations of space and law. That one was coming to them, under the bridge, and they weren't dreaming, they felt the physical presence of the bridge, their friend laughing in front of them, the very catchable, edible meal. It had been found in the dump, a supermarket for those who know how to go there, and those three knew it, from a long and olfactory science.
Eating it raw or unseasoned wouldn't taste the same. One from under the bridge went hunting for salt. And there was salt thrown on a street corner, in the can. Salt also exists under certain rules, but it can be made accessible depending on the circumstances. And the can was brought under the bridge. Under the bridge the three prepared food. Under the bridge they ate it. Not being a daily operation, each tasted twice: the meat and the sensation of the rarity of the meat. And they would enjoy the rest of the day sleeping (for there is nothing better, after a pleasure, than the complementary pleasure of forgetting), when they began to feel pain.
Pains that increased, but could be attributed to the astonishment of some part of the organism of each one, seeing that they were fed without having received prior news of food. Two died soon, the third agonized in hospital.
Some say they died from the meat, others say that from salt, because it was caustic soda. There are two spaces under the bridge.
