With a population of nearly 3,000 tigers, India has become "one of the safest habitats in the world" for cats, the prime minister announced. Indian, Narendra Modi, in an event in New Delhi when presenting, on the occasion of International Tiger Day, the latest census on the estimated population of this animal in the country.
According to the report, the feline population in India has increased by 33% since 2014. The number of tigers in the country has more than doubled since 2006, the year the first census of the species was carried out.
Counting uses new technologies and not only in locating footprints, as was previously done.
The last census was carried out in 15 months and had 26,000 camera traps that record nearly 350,000 images of animals in their habitats. Government officials also participated in the survey, which spanned an area of 380,000 square kilometers.
Among the measures adopted by India to protect the endangered species is environmental protection through the demarcation of reserves. Conflict with humans, however, has grown since the country began conservation programs in the 1970s.
