Guerra e Paz, the two gigantic panels painted by Cândido Portinari, cover the walls of a restricted area of the United Nations building in New York. O Mestiço, with the image of a strong man, with black skin and a striking look, can be seen at the Pinacoteca in São Paulo.
Café, which shows the hard work of men and women in harvesting the beans, is at the National Museum of Fine Arts, in Rio de Janeiro.
Now, these and other 5,000 works by Cândido Portinari can be seen by anyone with internet access in a virtual museum dedicated to the artist. Some of these works, including Guerra e Paz, O Mestiço e Café, were captured in very high resolution, the so-called gigapixels, which allows you to see details of each brushstroke of these paintings.
The retrospective also brings together another 15 thousand letters from the artist and a virtual reality visit to the house where he was born and raised, in Brodowski, in the interior of São Paulo.
The platform was launched this week by Google Arts & Culture, but the effort to gather and digitize the works of Portinari started 40 years ago, headed by the Portinari Project, an institution created by the painter's son, João Cândido Portinari.
For him, the partnership with the powerful multinational, which maintains the most visited website in the world, boosted his dream of taking the painter's message to the public.
Sonora: “The dream we always had, and which seemed to be an impossible dream, was for you to look at Portinari's work as if it were a great letter he writes to the Brazilian people. Not only a plastic letter, but an ethical and humanistic one, of a struggle for ethical, human values. And this letter did not reach its destination, as more than 95% are in private collections. And the idea of showing the letter came with our portal. And then he joined hunger with the desire to eat."
With this, Portinari becomes the first Brazilian painter to have a retrospective on the platform that already brings together artists such as Sandro Botticelli, Van Gogh and Frida Kahlo. To access the works, just access the Google Arts page, available at artsandculture.google.com.
